Exposing Environmental Issues

Introduction

Students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of environmental issues gained through Internet research. They will expose examples of how environmental problems are evidenced and impacting their own communities through the planning and production of a video that will be shown to class members. It is expected that through this activity, the students will begin to develop a lifelong concern for their environment and demonstrate through their actions that they are indeed a generation that cares.

Prerequisite Experience

Students will have experience with Internet research, the use of a word processor and video production skills.

Teacher Prep Time

Varies (one to two hours)
Teacher should be familiar with the research links in the Explore section of the plan. Those that have not had experience with digital video cameras and production processes should review the Video Production materials found at www.NortelLearniT.org. Students will need to refer to these materials during the course of the lesson.

Project

Students will provide a one-page summary of their research and submit a video that exposes one or more issues from the community or school. Videos will be shown to the class.

Assessment/Grading

A project rubric has been provided to assist in assessing the video. Students can do a group assessment of their participation in the production of the video.

Time Management Tips

Students can work in groups. Teachers can limit the length of the video.
