Introduction

Students will research volcanoes of the world paying particular attention to those that have caused extensive damage and casualties. They will discover how volcanoes work, what causes them to erupt and what the impact of volcanic activity is on the earth and communities around them. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the topic though a choice of one of several projects listed in the Engage section of the plan. Students will work in teams on this project.

Prerequisite Experience

Students must have some experience with Internet research, word processing and web design software.

Teacher Prep Time

(1 or 2 hours)
Teachers will want to familiarize themselves with tutorials and videos dealing with web page creation, web-authoring software and PowerPoint slide shows found at www.NortelLearniT.org. Students will be expected to work through these materials as needed. Teachers should also review the websites and resources in the Explore section of this lesson plan.

Project

Students will submit a summary of their findings in their own words and a bibliography of web sites used in the planning and development of their volcano projects.

Assessment/Grading

A rubric for assessing presentations will be provided. The teacher will grade student papers.

Time Management Tips

Students should work in groups ensuring that each topic is covered. They should not limit their research to the Internet.
