They Came to America

Wiki Assessment

Title Word Play

Sample Newsletter

Introduction

Many immigrants settled in America searching for religious freedom.  These settlements developed into 13 colonies which led to the creation of the United States.  The colonies were a part of the British Empire until the American Revolution in 1775.  With the colonization of America, came diversity, ideas and varied cultures and traditions.  How did change affect America? How did it affect the 13 colonies?  How did it affect North Carolina? Your family?

Prerequisite Experience

Students should be introduced to podcasting, wiki, GPS devices. Applications included desktop publishing.

Teacher Prep Time

Teacher Prep is about 50 minutes:

  1. Hide artifacts
  2. Create wiki
  3. Review Nortel Podcasting Curriculum

http://nortellearnit.org/digitalaudiocurriculum#intro

Project

Students will use GPS and latitude and longitude coordinates to locate artifacts. These artifacts will be used to determine immigrant country of origin, push and pull factors for relocating, travel hardships and experiences, etc.  This information and additional information obtained from research will be used to create a wiki page describing immigrant experiences.

Assessment/Grading

A rubric will be use to evaluate the completeness of project, collaborating and analytical skills.

Time Management Tips

Students should be placed in 4-member groups.

Introduce students to GPS devices prior to the geocache event.

Lesson Plan Details

Engage

  1. As a class play the "immigration" title word play game
    • Use the letters in immigration to create words associated with immigration
  2. Use PowerPoint to introduce the lesson and to answer the question "Is America a Melting Pot or a Salad Bowl"?
  3. Immigration Geocaching
    • Give students GPS devices and provide latitudes and longitudes for artifacts. Students search for artifacts and use clues to identify country and immigrant group
  4. Were immigrants welcomed to their new homes?
  5. Is America really a melting pot?
  6. Why do people immigrate?

Explore
