Introduction
Learning strategies are techniques or principles that enable a student to learn to solve problems or complete tasks independently. Learning strategies not only emphasize the steps needed to perform a strategy (for example, the steps to follow in reading a textbook), but they also stress why and when to use that strategy as well as how to monitor its usage. Teacher candidates will identify a learning strategy that is applicable to subject area they will be teaching and create a video tutorial for students on how to use the strategy.Prerequisite Experience
Teacher candidates should be familair with video production and digital video camera operation.Teacher Prep Time
One to two hours. Instructors should review the Video Production Training videos at Nortel LearniT and the operation of a digital video camera. They may need to gain experience with video editing software. It would be useful to have teacher candidates explore the training videos as they progrss through the project. Instructors should also have a variety of sources (e.g., textbooks, etc.) of learning strategies available.Project
Teacher candidates with create a video tutorial on how to use a specific learning strategy.Assessment/Grading
An evaluation rubric has been included for this assignment.Time Management Tips
Teacher candidates can work in pairs.Lesson Plan Details
Engage
Provide teacher candidates with written instructions on an unfamilair topic (e.g., how to cope a joint). Bring out a piece of molding and a coping saw and ask if anyone would like to try it. Then show a video tutorial and have teacher candidates compare and contrast the two sets of instructions. Discuss the benefits of students having access to a video tutorial of a learning strategy. Explain that they will be creating video tutorials of learning strategies.Explore
Teacher candidates will identify learning strategies that are applicable to their teachable major. They can use the available resources and the Internet to find learning strategies.Explain
Teacher candidates will share the learning strategies they found with others who have the same teachable major. Each teacher candidate will choose one strategy for their video tutorial.Elaborate
Teacher candidates will create a script and a storyboard for their tutorials. The tutorial should:
- introduce the strategy,
- explain why it is used,
- explain how and when it can be used,
- demonstrate and model (think aloud) its use - include both examples and non-examples of appropriate strategy usage, carefully explaining why they are examples or non-examples,and
- teach the steps of the strategy.
