Architecture and Math

Introduction

Students will investigate the field of architecture as a career choice, with specific research into the use of geometric shapes (polygons) in building design and construction. In the first part of the project the students will use a digital camera to record examples of the use of polygons in building design in their communities. They will present their findings to the class using a PowerPoint slide show. In the second they complete a drawing of a building as per the instructions in the Explain and Elaborate section.

Prerequisite Experience

The students will have demonstrated competence with navigating the Internet and keyboarding skills. They will possess some basic knowledge of the use of presentation software and a digital camera.

Teacher Prep Time

Teachers will want to become familiar with some of the sites dealing with the topic area. It will be useful to look at the PowerPoint and Digital Imaging training videos found at Nortel LearniT (www.NortelLearniT.org). If time permits teachers might want to arrange a field trip to a location where there are many unusual buildings for the Digital photography component.

Project

Students will create a PowerPoint slideshow to present their photos of interesting buildings and the reasons for their choices. They will design a building and submit their drawings.

Assessment/Grading

An evaluation rubric has been provided to use in assessing the presentations and drawings.

Time Management Tips

Students can be divided into groups for the presentation but each student will design and draw their own buildings.
