Lesson Plan Details

Engage

Bring in examples of photojournalism final products (nine week project from third grade) to view and get a sense as to what a photojournalist is and what photojournalists do.

Explore

Students look through magazines to explore and analyze the works of photojournalists.

Compare and contrast photojournalism to other types of material.

Watch online video clips: interviews with a variety of photojournalists and their work samples.

Explain

Using Inspiration 9, Rapid Fire, students will work in teams to complete ideas for the four areas of the Frame of a Disciplinarian- Photojournalist.

Once all teams have finished, combine all responses on the Promethean Board and type them into “Wordle” to display a splash of all responses for each area.

Elaborate

Students will apply all that they know about photojournalism and create a school related topic for their own elaboration.  They will brainstorm the layout and plan (including which program to use) for the creation and publication of their own article.

Evaluate

“Wordle” serves as an excellent tool because it shows the popularity and unique differences within the students’ responses.

Meet with the students to discuss their ideas for their photojournalism article. A rubric will be used to assess final product.

Extend

The students will use all of this background information and newly acquired knowledge to research and do a photojournalism article on one of the major rivers. They will complete an interest inventory to determine which river they will be studying. The topics included will be the geographic, economic, historical, and cultural features of their river.
