Introduction
Students are introduced to magnets and their properties as well as key vocabulary.Prerequisite Experience
Students should be comfortable using digital cameras as well as typing information and inserting images into powerpoint.Teacher Prep Time
20 to 30 minutes.
Locate digital cameras
Become familiar with the Powerpoint program
Develop puppet show
Locate movies.
Project
The students will experiment with magnets, take pictures with digital cameras, and develop a power point presentation identifying their characteristicsAssessment/Grading
RubricTime Management Tips
Students should be placed in small groups or partner pairs and have well defined jobs.Lesson Plan Details
Engage
Teacher uses a plastic "messy tray" or other plastic tray that is opaque. Attach scenery to the front of the tray( I like telling the story of the water cycle with a raindrop PLUS you can use it again when you are exploring the water cycle) and have the main character move around the tray independently. Students will wonder how you made the main character move. Take all guesses as to how you made the character move from place to placeExplore
Tell students that they need to find out what their magnets can "do." Give groups of students sets of magnets and digital cameras. Have them take pictures of everything they can make the magnets "do."Explain
Students download their images onto the computer telling the class what the magnets were doing in each imageElaborate
Students are asked to elaborate on why magnets were reacting in certain ways and what is attracted to a magnet? Why was the magnet attracting or repeling? Students watch the United Streaming video A First Look at Magnets during this phase. Students are asked to identify attract, repel, poles, and objects attracted to a magnet. They record their findings and use them to create a power point presentation including pictures of their findings as well as text.Evaluate
At the end of this lesson a student should be able to
-define the words attract and repel
-define magnetic poles and how they interact
-identify objects that will be attracted to a magnet
A rubric will be used with a one to four grading scale
4=All words were defined, objects attracted to magnets were identified, power point slides had text and pictures and made sense, information was well presented.
3= Words were identified, most objects attracted to magnets were identified, powerpoint slides may have missed some content, presentation was adequate
2=Some definitions were missing, objects attracted to magnets were missing, powerpoint slides missing text or pictures, presentation lacking
1=Many definitions and objects attracted to magnets missing, powerpoint slides missing text or pictures, presentation lacking
Students will be given the rubric after their presentation to assess themselves, they will also be assessed by their classmates.
