Introduction
The advanced internet search is located in the Explore portion of the lesson. This of course can help the students further explain why other reactions occur like bubble boiling over in a pot and why root beer and ice cream fizzes so much.
How the internet can meet some of my instructional goals: Goal 1. Identify the different disciplines that encompass science. While researching the sites, the students will discover what type of science is being used to discover the answer to why the experiment happens the way it does.
Goal 2. Use events and objects to make inferences and draw conclusions. Students can use the information from the sites to make inferences about the further exploration that is in the "Extend" portion of this plan.
Goal 3. Scientists answer simple questions by conducting simple experiments/investigations using simple tools. The internet investigation will answer the question as to why the reaction occurs when mentos are dropped into diet coke.
The internet safety protocols used are simple. The students will be taught that they should never give out any personal information and that they should not expect to be asked for any such information. They are not allowed to download anything unless told to. They will not be allowed to enter into any online chat discussions concerning their topic.
Prerequisite Experience
Must be familiar with Livebinder. http://livebinders.com/
Lesson Plan Details
Engage
Monday
Engage:
I start by telling them that today we are going to be chemist. A chemist mixes things together to find out what happens and or to make new things. As scientist, we have to use the scientific method and ask, “If I put these 4 mentos in this bottle of diet coke, then I think ______ will happen.” Give the students 15 seconds of think time. Next have them do a round robin to explain their hypothesis. Then I will take the students outside and conduct the experiment. Students will use their senses to observe what happens and to verify their hypothesis. Finally the students will come in and record their observations by illustrating and writing what they saw.
Explore
Tuesday
Explore:
The students will go online and do an effective Google search using the following technique. In the search window, the students will type in (the, science, behind, the, diet, coke, mentos, experiment) to do research as to why the reaction happened in the first place. The better readers will be tasked with informing their group as to what the articles are saying. The group will then discuss this as well as any other situation in which they might have seen something similar to the diet coke and mentos experiment..

Explain
Wednesday
Explain:
Based upon this information the students can use MS Paint or the Activspire software for the promethean board to illustrate what is going on inside the bottle when the mentos are dropped in. In the meantime, a designated writer for the group will write sentences that match the illustration or illustrations. The student can then use the computer lab to scan their image of their writing to be used along with their illustration. The students will need to add this to their livebinder.
Elaborate
Thursday
Elaborate:
Each group will come up and report their findings to the class and demonstrate their understanding by using whatever software they choose as well as speaking about their findings. If the students used livebinder, they will use it to present their findings.
Evaluate
Friday
Evaluate:
Students will be given a rubric to self evaluate their presentation as well as the content of their findings. I will be using a rubric as well and be checking off the areas of accomplishments as groups present their findings.
Extend
Friday
Extend:I will ask the students that based upon their research, can they explain why some things in pots on a stove boil over, or why root beer foams up so much when ice cream is put into it. Students can use the following website to aid in this.
http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/101/consumer/faq/mentos.shtml
I want each table to come up with one more "If I do this, then I think this will happen" statement as it pertains to the mentos and diet coke experiment, and to let me know what that is. I will then get the necessary supplies that their new hypothesis requires and we will conduct those experiments at a later time.
