Introduction
is an introductory lesson to the various forms of energy that are used in the world. Students will learn the names and definitions of the various forms of energy, and they will also search for examples of each form. We will then discuss some examples as a class.
Prerequisite Experience
Students must know how to operate a basic digital camera.Teacher Prep Time
Approximately 2 hours.Project
Students will create a poster on the computer about one form of energy that they learned about. The poster will need to have at least 3 pieces of information on it, and it will have to be colourful with pictures and graphics.Assessment/Grading
RubricTime Management Tips
Ensure that students know exactly how much time they have to complete each portion of the assignment.
Lesson Plan Details
Engage
1. Give the definition of ‘Energy’. Explain to the students that you are going to show them pictures and they need to say ‘yes’ if they think it is showing energy being used, or ‘no’ if they don’t think energy is being used.
2. Do not give the students the answers because the pictures will be shown again at the end of the class to see if they have learned about energy.
3. Use document camera, computer, and data projector to display images.
Some pictures that can be shown are:
- A computer - a bucket of water
- An oven - a light
- A jogger - money
- A battery - a desk
- A radio - a cat eating food
Explore
1. The students will be put into groups, and each group will be given a different form of energy to research either using books or the internet.
2. They will be asked to find a definition of the form they were assigned and at least 4 examples of it.
Explain
1. Each group will then do a brief 3 minute presentation to explain the form of energy that they researched, and to discuss the examples of that form of energy.
2. The information must be clear and concise. The teacher will add any necessary information once the group has finished presenting.
3. At the end of the presentations, the teacher will do a brief oral recap of the forms and examples.
Elaborate
1. Have the students get into pairs.
2. Each pair will then be given a digital camera.
3. They will then be asked to search the classroom, outside, and any other area designated by the teacher, for forms of energy.
4. When they find an example, they will take a picture of it and be prepared to explain what form they think it is.
5. After 15 minutes, the students will return to class and show their pictures and discuss the forms of energy.
Evaluate
Group Evaluation : How did you divide the work? What did each group member contribute?
Self-Evaluation: What did you learn about energy forms that you didn’t know before this class?
Extend
1. Students will each get to use a computer in the computer lab.
2. They will then need to create a poster about one of the forms of energy.
3. It will need to be colourful, and have at least 3 pieces of information, relating to the form chosen. The sheet will need to be completely filled with facts, colour, pictures, etc.
