Introduction
Time to Complete: 6 days
Introduction: Students learn that air and water are important resources. They discuss factors that affect air and water quality. They will use Voice thread to hear from children in other areas how pollution affects where they live. Students will create a video about pollution and what they can do to help.
Prerequisite Experience
Prerequisites: Students need to have permission to access the internet. Students need to know how to enter a website address. They will need to learn how to download and save videos to share with teacher and classmates. Arrange time for students to view videos on using Movie Maker in the Video Production section, Better Searches in Discovering the Internet, and Digital Imaging in the Video Tutorials section of LearnIt TeachIt website. Engage
Engage: (Day 1)
1. Show YouTube clip of Little Green Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js-f2jQ9p9A ).
2. Discuss with table groups what you noticed in the video clip. Write what you thought the Llittle Green Man learned about on sticky notes and sort them. Find sticky notes that are about the same thing to put together in a group.
3. Your group will become an expert on one type of pollution. List the types of pollution you saw in the video. Likely some of these are what you wrote on your sticky notes. Discuss which type of pollution your group would like to become experts on. Using student #1 at each table group as your scribe, write a letter to the teacher telling her which type of pollution you would like to study and why. Be sure to include every group member..no hogs and logs.
4. Students will hopefully come up with air, water, and land pollution. Some will also come up with reduce, reuse and recycle.
Explore
Explore (Day 2-3)
1. Student groups will be given a topic from Day 1 to study based on their letters. More than one group may study a form of pollution. Each student will keep a journal of what they discover in their research to share with teammates.
2. Use Live Binder as a source of sites for students to study in their exploring to learn more.
3. Arrange for 6 digital cameras. Take a walk around the school grounds. Look for signs of “your” pollution. Take photos of your pollution only. Be sure each team member gets to take one photo. Return to class to share photos with your group.
4. In the computer lab, students research their type of pollutant.
5. Gather with your team to share what you found out. Do you have any questions that still need to be answered? What do you think is important to share with the class about your pollution? Write it down in your journal.
Explain
Explain (Day 4)
1. Student groups share their findings and photos with the class.
Tell: What are some causes of your pollution?
Where is your pollution found?
How can this type of pollution be prevented?
How can it be cleaned up?
Classmates may also ask questionsElaborate
Elaborate (Day 5-7)
1. The students in your group are now all experts on your type of pollution, what causes it and what can be done about it. Plan how you will show how your pollution is caused, where it is found and how to clean it up. (Hand out Storyboard template) Make a video to show your expertise. Make the video using MovieMaker and save it under L:/StudentWork_/Doty. Let me know when you have finished. Remember your time is limited to 3 days. We will be presenting our videos on the third day. If you are stuck, ask for help!
