Introduction

Introduction – The teacher will show students an already made PowerPoint on lions.  After the power point is shown, the teacher will let the students see the blank slides. The teacher will tell them they will work in teams to research an animal the teacher will pick.  Each animal will have different body coverings.  They will find other interesting characteristics which they will add to their presentations.

Prerequisite Experience

Students will be able to tell the differences between animals.  Students will be able to identify some animals by looking at their coverings, how they move and how many legs they have and any other interesting features. (For example, they know fish do not walk on land)

Teacher Prep Time

30-60 minutes.  The teacher will prepare the two PowerPoints.  The teacher has prepared a lion PowerPoint as an example and a blank one for the students. The teacher will log on to several computers so each group will have a computer.  The teacher will also open the blank PowerPoint as well as this web site: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player/animals/index.html. At this web site, they will view the video of their animal.

Project

By watching the videos, the students will get their research from here.  The will put their research into the blank power point. The teacher will move throughout the groups to make sure everyone is doing their part.

Time Management Tips

Each group will be given an animal.  The groups will be related in that all the students in one group will be researching animals that have feathers(duck), scales(fish), furry(bear) and smooth animals(frog).  Also each student will do one slide of the presentation.  If the teacher does all things in time prep, this will cut down on any down time.

Lesson Plan Details

Engage

Students will watch the United Streaming video Animal Zoop.  This will give them an idea about the different animals. This will get the students excited about the animals plus it will give them a visual. The students will see all different types of animals and characteristics of animals so they can get an idea of what animals belong together.

Explore

The students will go to web sites that the teacher has pulled up and find out more about the animal they are researching. Each group will have one web site to use so they will not get their information confused. The information on the web sites will help them find out things like body coverings, appendages, appendages and methods of movement.  For extra credit they can discuss whether the animals are wild/tame or whether they have water/land homes. They can also tell their about the life needs.

Explain

Each group will use a graphic organizer to organize their animal facts.  This is a chart that has boxes for each characteristic, such as body coverings, appendages and homes.  When they have their organizer ready, they will use these facts to make a slide. Each box can make a slide in the presentation.

Elaborate

This is the part where the students will take the information and put it into a PowerPoint.  The teacher will give the students the blank PowerPoint so they can begin. The students will receive help as they make it. Using an LCD projector, the teacher will show how to change colors, and designs of the slides. Once again each child will create one slide apiece for their presentation.  Each slide will come from the information in the boxes in the graphic organizer. They will get to decide their own colors and designs.

Evaluate

This is the section where the teacher evaluates the learning that has occurred.  The teacher will go from group to group to be sure everyone is doing what they need to do. The teacher will be sure the students are staying on task. The teacher will review the power point to see if the students have learned and demonstrated what they learned. The teacher will use a teacher created rubric and will carry it as she makes her rounds to be sure everyone is doing what they need to do.

Extend

Two groups of students will get together.  One group will present their information to the other group using their PowerPoint slide and then switch.  Since each group will have a different type of animal, they will brainstorm and come up with a list of animals that are similar to the ones that were presented to them.
