Introduction

The student will create a report about an animal they pick.

Prerequisite Experience

Exposure to a variety of different animals and their environments, a lesson on inserting clip art into a Word document, and an understanding of the terms “wild” and “tame” as it pertains to the animal world.

Teacher Prep Time

1 hour

Project

The student will select and print an animal picture from those available from clip art on the computer, and then print the picture. They will draw the appropriate environment around the animal. The students will then help create an icon to represent five methods of movement (walk, crawl, fly, hop, and swim), and icons for wild and tame.

Assessment/Grading

The student should have selected the appropriate environment, method of movement, and determine if the animal is considered wild or tame.

Time Management Tips

ive the students slips of paper to “select” and write the name of their animal. This will expedite their time on the computer.  Place as many students on computers as possible. While the first group is working on the computers have the other students begin drawing their environments. Rotate as needed.

Lesson Plan Details

Engage

The students will watch the United Streaming Video “Animal ABC.” Tell the students they will need to watch for an animal to create a report about.

Explore

After they have picked an animal, they need to watch the United Streaming video “Animals in Action” in order to identify the manner in which their particular animal travels.

Explain

At this point the class will divide the class into 7 heterogeneous groups to come up with icons or symbols for the terms fly, swim, walk, hop, crawl, wild, and tame. I will print a sheet of these symbols for the children to paste appropriately on their reports to assist them when they orally report on their animals.

Elaborate

Each child will make a video on iMovie reporting on their selected animal.

Evaluate

The class will watch the iMovies and each student will say something positive about the report and something they think could make it better.

Extend

The students can take the information given in the evaluation discussion and apply it by giving oral presentations on their animals to other classrooms in our school.
