Save the Animals, Before It Is Too Late

Introduction

Students will work in groups to find out more about the causes of animal endangerment and to study, in more detail, one endangered animal. Based upon this research, they will develop a multimedia campaign to inform others about the endangered species and the need to save these animals.

Prerequisite Experience

Students should be able to conduct research online and use a word processor. Prior PowerPoint or other presentation software tool experience would be helpful. It would also be helpful if students have some knowledge of Web authoring software

Teacher Prep Time

1 – 2 hours
Review the identified Web resources in Explore.
Review the Nortel LearniT training videos on PowerPoint and Web Content Creation.

Project

Students will use the Web to conduct their research. They will assume the role of a conservationist for the World Wildlife Federation and develop a PowerPoint and/or a Web site to present information about one endangered species.

Assessment/Grading

Using a presentation rubric, the student PowerPoint projects and Web sites will be evaluated on their subject knowledge, their analytical skills, and their ability to use the tools to convey their applied understanding.

Students will also be asked to evaluate their own work and the work of their team.

Time Management Tips

Limit the number of slides or pages students create in their final projects (e.g. 5-7).

Much of the research for this project can be conducted as homework.
