Introduction

The lesson involves and introduction to the properties of water.  Students will use technology to learn about the unique properties of water.  In addition student will explore why it is and ways to conserve water through a webquest activity.

Prerequisite Experience

Some knowledge of the water cycle.  Some knowledge of various methods of energy conversion.  How to get information off the school server.

Teacher Prep Time

Teacher must create water PowerPoint, web quest.  Teacher must put the web quest and PowerPoint on the school network for easy student access.

Project

  1.  Completion of Water vocabulary notes related to the PowerPoint.
  2. Completion of Water WebQuest activities.  

Teacher needs to make sure that all the computers are hooked up to the school server

Time Management Tips

Make sure all students know how to find documents on the server.  Make sure that all students know how to open links within a word document.   Make sure that all the links on the web quest open.

Lesson Plan Details

Engage

Recall prior knowledge about water via the concept map.

Explore

Students will look up the “text” definition of content specific terminology including: polar molecule, capillary action, surface tension, solvent, solute, condensation, evaporation, precipitation, melting, boiling, freezing.

Explain

Students will go through a PowerPoint where “our” simplified definitions are clearly stated and pictures and examples are shown.  Students will create water dictionaries as notes on index cards.

Elaborate

Students will engage in a ten task online web quest.  They will answer online water related trivia questions, view online water related video and play online water related games.

Evaluate

Students will successfully complete the tasks within the web quest and successfully answer questions related to the web quest for formal evaluation.  Students will respond to an online survey about the quality of information in the PowerPoint and quality of tasks in the web quest

Extend

Students will explore the websites to find more water related information.  Also students will be able to think of ways in which they can conserve water in their homes after completing the water calculator component of the web quest.  Students will continue to engage in classroom activities about water.  For example the water: surface tension lab activity.
