Introduction

Students will explore the world of Spanish speaking entertainment. They will learn about actors, directors, tv stars, singers, writers, and other celebrities in the Spanish-speaking world. They will examine how their status and fame is unique in that culture andhow it relates to that of the US. Students will choose a genre ora country and explore three specific entertainers. They will work in teams of 2-4 and present their information through a power point, movie, Scrapbook or other display of their digital information.

Prerequisite Experience

Search for articles written in Spanish (set search language to Spanish)

Power point

Movie maker or iMovie

Teacher Prep Time

2-5 hours to research sites and celebrities to present to students before and during the unit, depends on the teacher's familiarity with the topic

Project

Students will create their own presentation. They will decide what medium they prefer to use to showcase their work. They may create an eCollage, a movie, a power point presentation, or use another format that the teacher approves. They may also use the Filimentality site and create a digital Scrapbook. Students should organize, analyze, and synthesize the information that they have acquired and create a summary of what they have learned. They should create a presentation for their classmates and teacher that will capture their attention with powerful images. They should be prepared to explain their topic in Spanish using language that their classmates will understand and in a format that will keep their attention.

Assessment/Grading

Rubric to assess students' use of language, clarity and accuracy of information presented, effectiveness of presentation

Lesson Plan Details

Engage

Teacher introduces the topic with digital images of several important Spanish-speaking celebrities that the students will probably recognize. Project images on a screen using the multi-media projector and engage students in a discussion of these stars.

Explore

Students will investigate the world of entertainment in the Spanish-speaking world. One site to visit is www.worldmapper.org where they can check the communication page. This gives a visual of television, radio, newspapers, and movies usage in the world. They should then check different web sites and videos to examine celebrities from a country that they choose or or a genre that they choose.

Explain

The teacher will give students relevant vocabulary in Spanish. She will also show students how to set their Google search preferences to Spanish so they can research only articles written in Spanish. Students may present an outline of their project and main ideas for teacher feedback.

Elaborate

Evaluate

Students will be evaluated with a rubric that will be provided in advance to use in assessing the presentations. The rubic will assess the languge used (Spanish), clarity and accuracy of information, and the effectiveness of the presentation. Students should be encouraged to evaluate their work throughout the process. They should also solicit feedback from their classmates about their projects.

Extend

Students should take the information they have learned and plan a way to apply this knowledge in the real world. Can they find movie in Spanish to go see or to rent? Is there a Spanish-speaking singer they want to download? Is there a writer’s works in Spanish that they would like to read?
