How do the achievements of the Roman Empire contribute and influence our society today? What examples of Roman influence can you find in your school, home, or community? How would our society be different without the contributions of the Romans?Prerequisite Experience
Students should have a basic understanding of geographic concepts and The Roman Empire's conquest of Europe and North Africa, of the history of the Roman Empire, and of the achievements of the Roman Empire. Students will use the Internet and other sources to research information on The Roman Empire. Students will use digital cameras to capture examples of Roman achievements and influence around the school, community and their homes. Students will be able to write an essay describing contributions of the Romans. Students will be able to use Photoshop to create a slideshow presentation of their pictures.Assessment/Grading

1. Review the Rome PowerPoint. It contains no notes or information, only the topic headings that you will research and a few simple pictures.2. Complete the first two sections of the worksheet (What I know, and What I would like to know) on Roman Contributions. The worksheet can be found in the WORD and PDF version of this lesson. Can you think of ways the Roman Empire contributed to today's society?
3. You will be researching the Romans and find answers to your questions while you are researching.

2. You will be in groups of 2-3 students to complete your research. Then, using your research, you will create a slideshow that depicts Roman contributions to today's society.

1. You will have a group meeting with your teacher to discuss your research.

3. When you have finished your worksheet, discuss your answers with the class. How have the Romans contributed to today's culture? What are some lasting contributions of the Romans?

1. Now that you have completed your research, you will venture out into your community and school to look for influences of the Roman Empire.2. Using a digital camera, take photographs of examples of Roman influence on your home, school, community, and other places. Travel to places that showcase the Roman influence.
3. After you have had the chance to take photos of Roman influence in your community, you and your will group will compile your photos into a presentation to share with the class.
4. Using a photo editor such as Photoshop, edit your photos to use in a slide show presentation. If your school does not have Photoshop, you may also use PowerPoint to complete your presentation.

Consider some of these suggestions for extending this activity.1. After hearing all of the class presentations, create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the Roman culture to American culture.
2. Find a food recipe from the Roman Empire and make the food for the class.
3. Research the clothing of the Romans and then come into class dressed as a Roman.
4. Research several Latin phrases and recite them to the class.
