Introduction

Students will research careers in the health sciences area based on their interest in the work performed. As they learn more about a specific career they will investigate the academic and professional preparation required for it. They will then create and share a Glogster chart presenting their findings and analysis of the specific career.

Prerequisite Experience

Strong Internet research skills and citation ability; comfort with the use of application based web development tools (e.g. Glogster is a plus).

Teacher Prep Time

About 2 hours to prepare materials and handouts.

Project

Students will create their own Glogster chart to present their findings and analysis. Students will need to submit the URL for their work.

Assessment/Grading

Rubric (see attached)

Time Management Tips

Students can work in groups to share the research and creation of the final product.

Lesson Plan Details

Engage

You have been active in sports for a long period of time. You eat healthy and exercise daily. You notice some of your classmates are not as healthy or active as you are. College is right around the corner, and you need to plan for YOUR future, NOW!

You are thinking about potential careers, and which of those careers deal with health and nutrition. Much of nutrition deals with the energy provided by each food source. This is the chemistry aspect of nutrition.

Given your own background and your interests, what career would be suitable for you? Would you like to do something with nutritional planning or with studying the chemical aspects of the food we eat? Would you like to do something that relates to sports medicine or exercise therapy? There are many careers that relate to health and nutrition. But where do you get the information?

Explore

Look at some career profiles in a variety of occupations.  What are the common elements?  You need to review several to see what is common in the industry.   In addition, you will have to select one career for your example.  This should be a career that is RELATED to the health and nutrition field.  Choose one career for the Glogster page you will be creating later.  Record your findings.  Make sure to include the source information so that you can properly document where you found your information and to avoid plagiarism.

You will need an Internet capable computer that has word processing and web page development software installed.

Look at these web sites for examples of job advertisements and web based career profiles. Be sure to look at health industry jobs that could use chemistry.  It is expected that you will search and find some additional sites on your own.   You must open a blank document and keep track of useful sites and materials.  It will save you a lot of time.  You may also use EasyBib to keep track of sources and to take notes on those sources.  Accounts are free and easy to set up.

Summarize your findings and organize your information prior to beginning your web page.   Make sure to document your sources.  Hand the summary in to your teacher for approval.  At this point in your research, you should now be able to answer the following questions:

  • What are the common elements found in a career profile?
  • List at least five careers you looked at and where you found them.  Then choose ONE to do your glogster page on.
  • Research different careers using the Internet links provided in the Explore section.
Using your career of choice, complete the following information about the position:

1. Title of Career
2. Job Description
3. Wages (calculate both hourly wage and annual wage)
4. Employment Outlook/job openings
5. Responsibilities/working conditions/number of hours per week.
6. What attributes are needed for this career?
7. Education and training /Licenses required
8. What colleges/universities/community colleges offer a certification program in your career choice?
9. What is an average tuition, room & board for your selected higher education level?
10. Related occupations

Organize all of your information and create a storyboard for your Glogster Page.

Elaborate
