Digital Imaging Workshop

Digital Imaging Workshop

Welcome! This training course is intended to be used to train others who will teach students through hands-on activities, digital imaging, and the use of their skills to create works that demonstrate mastery of subject matter across the curriculum.

This curriculum is designed as a guide for a 1/2-day hands-on workshop.

The curriculum outline integrates Nortel LearniT videos, real assignments and actual examples from students.  It represents a merger of the Nortel LearniT online resources with proven skill-based, project-driven approach to digital media instruction. A special thanks to Cathy Reid for her work to develop and refine this curriculum.

Preparing for Your Digital Imaging Workshop

Workshops could be held on a Saturday, on a professional development day or over several evenings. The suggested length of this workshop is approximately 4 hours. Watch all of the videos ahead of time. Test headphones, sound, scanner and digital camera(s). Our tutorials use Adobe Photoshop as the image editor, however many features are similar across programs, so you could substitute another program (Nortel LearniT also uses the freeware program IrfanView) This workshop allows participants to learn at their own pace and supports both new and experienced users. Participants will work on a project (a collage) throughout the course to practice new skills. Prepare participation certificates. Ask participants to bring with them an image or photo (to scan), a disk to save their work to and if scheduling requires a snack and/or lunch.

Introduction. (20 minutes) Provide an overview and agenda of the schedule for the workshop. Modify this handout (or create a new one) to distribute to participants. Watch the Digital Imaging Project  video [2:41] as a group or individually at work stations.

Digital Imaging Basics (30-45 minutes) At their own pace, participants will view the following:. Raster and Vector Images [6:34], Image Resolution [5:25], Raster File Types [9:47] and Vector File Types [5:48].

Participants may want to watch certain videos more than once. Review the content covered, including new format acronyms and other new terminology.

Capturing Digital Images (60-90 minutes) Participants will view these three videos and use each method of capturing digital images in preparation to build their project. Digital Cameras [10:35], Scanners [8:22] and Screen Captures [4:39].

Allow Participants hands-on time to practice these new skills.

Helpful Tip #1 – watch the Digital Ethics video Copyright [7:02] and discuss the legalities behind using Internet images. Demonstrate how to search for and copy Internet images.

Helpful Tip #2 Have participants bring USB drives or other portable storage to use to transfer images.

Manipulating Digital Images (90–120 minutes) Participants will view and practice new skills manipulating digital images. The tools used in the videos are Adobe Photoshop and IrfanView. Many key features of image editors are the same, use these tutorials even if your image editing software is different. View the following videos Digital Imaging Tools [4;47], Selection Tools [5:17], Image Adjustment [5:40], Photo Manipulation [5:35], Photoshop Layers  [6:30], and  Collage Project (Irfanview) [6:55].

Allow  hands-on practice and provide individual support at this time.

Wrap Up - Publishing (30 minutes) Close the day by reviewing the output options available to participants and wrapping up the project. View the videos Formatting for Web [7:19], Storing Pictures [7:55] and Printers and Printing [7:28].

Helpful Tip #3Allow  time for participants to print a copy of their final project, email themselves a copy or save to their portable storage

Extension (approximately 60 minutes)– if running an extended course, participants should be oriented on how to search NortelLearniT.org for lesson plans to use in their classroom and creating their own guide sheets.
