The Nortel Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC,  campus hosted young family member with an extensive array of TODSTW activities in 2008.  They captured parts of it in video viewable at at http://www31.nortel.com/webcast.cgi?id=6902 (refer to the Nortel LearniT chapter listing).

Use the list as a future TODSTW resource for older and younger visitors (and in MS Word or PDF).  Read these digital natives' thoughts on technology while participating in the Nortel LearniT activity!

Older children's activities included, alphabetically:

  • Multimedia Studio and Telepresence: Multimedia and Telepresence is changing the way we communicate with our customers, employees, vendors, and resellers.  Using technology to reduce our carbon footprint.  Nortel technologies such as Telepresence and Multimedia Services can allow us to collaborate and communicate around the world.
  • Sales Studio - Enterprise Technology in Everyday Life:  Description and overview of the Nortel technologies and the respective hardware platforms that are used in everyday business and life . This session also talks about how Nortel has changed and continues to change the way communications are used in everyday communications.   What makes communications really work and how Nortel develops products that make business and communicating  easier.
  • Southeast  Raleigh Robotic Showcase: Students & Teachers from Southeast Raleigh High School present impressive robots to Nortel to showcase the power of technology, incorporating science and math.  Focus on what a robot really is, how they are used in everyday life and around the world.

The younger children (~8 to 11) had a variety of games and demos, including, alphabetically:

  • Amusement Park Game: Teams of children run a virtual amusement park. Teams decide on how much to spend on marketing, ride selections, admission/ride prices, and hours of operation. Learn basic economic principles of supply and demand, competition, and budgeting.
  • Green Hope and Hillside Robotic Showcase: Students and teachers from Green Hope and Hillside High present impressive robots to Nortel to showcase the power of technology, incorporating science and math.  Focuses on what a robot really is, how they are used in everyday life and around the world.
  • Nortel LearniT:  Provides an overview of Nortel's LearniT program on using technology in schools.  Produce and record a promotional video based on the learnings.  LearniT can be found online at www.nortellearnit.org.  The videos will be available online after the event; see the FYIRTP website to access (please allow 1-2 days for videos to be available on the website).  Learn the value of technology as a learning tool; basic technology and video production concepts.
  • Snack Shack/One Laptop Per Child:  A break to enjoy a quick snack and learn about the One Laptop Per Child Program.  For more information on this global initiative, visit www.laptop.org.  A hands-on opportunity to interact using the XO laptop and see the results of Mesh Networking.
  • Zoo Juggle: A game where participants define a process by passing beanbag animals to each other and identify and implement ideas to improve the process.  Led by Black Belts in training from the Nortel Lean Six Sigma program.  Learn what a process is; introduction into business improvement, brainstorming, and other team-oriented skills.
What they said, when we asked:
  • Why do you want more technology used in school?
  • Because school would be a lot harder and it would take longer to do your work.
  • Personally, without more technology, school will be really boring.
  • More technology will help more kids learn...especially those that need more help.
  • Because you can look up almost anything online, and you don't have to go through all those books in the library.
What would school be like without technology?
  • It would be like the Medieval days...almost like writing on a rock!
  • Boring...I probably would not even want to go!
  • It would be a big disaster.
  • I don't think there should be school without technology!
